A woman whose wit, sparkle, and star-quality continue to light up the halls, Gloria's vibrant legacy was honored with a joyful celebration among family, friends, and devoted staff.

Born in the Bronx on October 7, 1923, Gloria ventured out on her own at just 18 years old to chase her dreams in Gramercy Park. Determined and fiercely independent, she worked to pay for her own dance, vocal, and theater lessons. She ultimately made her mark as a performer in Off-Broadway productions and a Summer Stock performance alongside famed actress Kim Hunter. She also graced the stage of game shows, showcasing her lively spirit and talent to a broader audience.

After meeting her husband, Gloria settled in Queens, NY, where she became a dedicated stay-at-home mom to her daughter, Lori. But, Gloria never stopped creating. Her passions for photography, poetry, and advocacy flourished. A staunch supporter of non-smokers’ rights, Gloria helped pass important legislation and left an indelible mark on her community.

“Gloria was a star,” her daughter Lori shared. “But more than that, she was always active, always engaged, always full of love.” A lover of knitting, crocheting, reading, dancing, and swimming, Gloria participated in YMCA classes well into her later years. She lived independently in Queens until the age of 92 before moving into assisted living, and eventually making The Hamlet her home.

Since joining The Hamlet community, Gloria’s presence has been nothing short of magical. Her infectious laugh, dazzling smile, and love for music have made her a cherished part of the community. The recreation department adores hearing her stories from her theater days, and her sharp humor keeps everyone on their toes. “She always knows how to get the whole room laughing,” the staff fondly shared.

To celebrate Gloria’s 102nd birthday, The Hamlet hosted a heartwarming celebration filled with everything she loves. The day began with her favorite morning ritual, coffee and cake in the café, seated at what she affectionately calls the “small white round tables.” Later, she enjoyed a private pizza lunch with family and friends in the second-floor dining room, followed by a lively party in the decorated program room, featuring a special performance by her favorite entertainer, Johnny Whimple.

Gloria wore a festive crown and sash, fitting for the queen of the day. Her daughter Lori shared, “We’re just looking forward to seeing her smile, and enjoying these special moments surrounded by love.”

Gloria’s advice for a long, happy life is simple: “Dancing and exercising are key... Love your family, and they will love you back.”
Though The Hamlet's celebration was intimate, with only close family, friends, and staff in attendance, the sense of community and affection was deeply felt. Gloria's favorite team member, Frank Florie, Dietary Supervisor, continues to brighten her days and make her feel like the star she’s always been.

For The Hamlet, celebrating Gloria’s 102nd birthday is more than a milestone. It is a moment to honor a life of passion and joy. As one team member put it, “Gloria’s laughter, her stories, her dancing- they’re the heartbeat of our community. We are so lucky to have her.”
