In a letter to Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, he said he was “deeply saddened” at the passing of McCain.
He expressed his heartfelt condolences on behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh to the government and the people of the United States, and particularly to the members of his bereaved family.
He said McCain, “who was a real American hero and a tall leader in the public service of the nation, was always a strong voice for global humanity, which was reflected in his many commendable works in the Senate including in recent times his firm stand against the atrocities on the Rohingyas in Myanmar, and for holding the perpetrators accountable”.
“Senator McCain’s and his family’s bondage with Bangladesh is very special as his adopted daughter, Bridget McCain, is of Bangladesh origin,” the foreign minister wrote.
McCain died of brain cancer on Saturday at the age of 81.
