Two 9th inning home runs by Alabama (17-1) helped the Tide push past the Blazers (13-4) at Regions Field on Tuesday night. The loss for UAB snapped its 8-game home winning streak to start the season.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings. In the top of the 3rd, Bryce Fowler homered to right to put the Tide up 1-0.
Fowler’s third hit of the game came in the 5th when he singled home Will Plattner to add to the Alabama advantage. The Tide added another run in the inning thanks to an RBI single by Coleman Mizell.
UAB would not go down without a fight as Jaden Anderson doubled home Tyler Waugh in the bottom half of the 5th. Anderson would later come around to score on a wild pitch to cut the Alabama lead to 3-2.
The Green and Gold threatened again in the 6th when Waugh singled home Todd Clay to tie the game at three a piece.
With one out in the 9th inning, Jason Torres homered to straight away center field to put the Tide up 4-3. Three batters later, Kade Snell hit a 2-run shot to right to salt away a 6-3 win for Alabama.
Beau Bryans got the win for Alabama in relief. Braxton Shelton battled for 5.1 innings for the Blazers, striking out five. Isaac Warrick threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and Brendan Conner went 1.1 scoreless.
Alabama opens SEC play Friday when they go to Texas A&M. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm. The Blazers return to action this weekend in Murfreesboro as they take on Middle Tennessee Friday to Sunday.
