Jürgen Klopp has overseen some hugely important transfers during his time at Liverpool, but that doesn’t just apply to the players who came in.

The German’s tenure has been characterised by a number of players leaving at the peak of their value, helping free up funds - or even just squad space - for others who have been able to improve the Reds’ fortunes on the field.

Here’s what has happened to all the players sold by Klopp since his arrival in 2015, including a handful who Klopp himself brought to Anfield.

Jose Enrique

The Spanish left-back struggled with injuries during his time at Anfield, and this caused him to hang up his boots just a year after leaving Liverpool for Real Zaragoza.

Since retiring, he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, but was given the all-clear in 2019. His post-playing career saw him begin work as a football agent.

Read an exclusive ECHO interview with Enrique about the moment he knew his Liverpool career was ruined here.

Kolo Toure

Toure, a member of the Liverpool squad which finished second in the Premier League in 2014, left for Celtic in 2016.

He retired after one season in Scotland and joined Brendan Rodgers’ coaching staff at Celtic Park before following the former Reds boss to Leicester City.

Jordan Rossiter

Rossiter left Liverpool for Rangers in 2016, but his time north of the border was affected by injury.

After a spell on loan at Fleetwood Town, the midfielder joined the League One club on a permanent deal ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Joao Carlos Teixeira

Portuguese winger Teixeira returned to his home country in 2016, spending time with Porto, Braga and Vitoria, for whom he featured in the Europa League.

He moved to Feyenoord last summer and has picked up minutes for the Dutch side at home and in Europe.

Jerome Sinclair

England youth talent Sinclair was Liverpool’s youngest ever player when he made his debut in 2012, but played just twice under Klopp and moved to Watford in 2016.

Now a free agent after his contract expired this summer, the majority of Sinclair’s time was spent away from Vicarage Road: he spent a year in the Netherlands with VVV and was on loan at Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia last season.

Samed Yesil

German striker Yesil left for Panionios in 2016, but only lasted two years in Greece.

He has spent the last few years between Germany and Turkey, and recently signed for DJK Teutonia St. Tönis in the German fifth tier.

Sergi Canos

Canos left Liverpool for Norwich following the Canaries’ 2016 relegation from the Premier League, but barely got a look in at Carrow Road before making a permanent switch to Brentford, where he had previously enjoyed a productive loan spell.

Now 24, the Spaniard will be looking to make more of an impression in the top flight this season for the recently promoted Bees.

Martin Skrtel

Skrtel had a solid three year spell with Fenerbahce after leaving Liverpool, playing for the Turkish side in the Super Liga and Europa League, but his time at Atalanta was less productive.

He returned to Turkey the same year to join Istanbul Basaksehir, but is now a free agent after a two-year spell.

Jordon Ibe

Liverpool secured a healthy fee from Bournemouth for Ibe, who struggled on the south coast.

The winger left having played just two league games in his final season, and is a free agent once more after spending last season with Derby County.

Joe Allen

Allen started well at Stoke City, where he linked up with compatriot Mark Hughes, but the Welshman’s second season at the bet365 Stadium ended in relegation and he has been one of a number of high earners unable to drag the Potters back to the top-flight.

He is still at Stoke and was a key member of the Wales side that reached the knockout stages of this summer’s Euros.

Brad Smith

Another man who left Liverpool for Bournemouth, Smith failed to make his mark under Eddie Howe.

After two loan spells, one at Seattle Sounders, the Australian made a permanent return to the MLS side last year.

Christian Benteke

Liverpool did well to get more or less all their money back for Benteke when they sold the £32m man to Crystal Palace.

After a standout first season, in which he scored 15 times in the league, Benteke struggled for form for several seasons, but he did reach 10 league goals last term.

Luis Alberto

One of the ones who perhaps got away too easily, Spanish midfielder Luis Alberto was essentially the right man at the wrong time.

He has found a new lease on life at Lazio, helping the Italian side return to the Champions League in 2020 and is currently being managed by ex-Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.

Mario Balotelli

Klopp was in the dugout when Balotelli finally left Liverpool permanently to join Nice in 2016.

After a good few years in France, including a short stint with Marseille, he returned to hometown club Brescia in 2019. After a short spell at Serie B side Monza, he signed for recently promoted Turkish side Adna Demirspor earlier this month.

Tiago Ilori

Portuguese defender Ilori stayed in England, where he was born, with a move to Reading in 2017.

He is now back at Sporting CP, the club where he began his career, but spent part of last season on loan at French side Lorient.

Jack Dunn

Young forward Dunn left for Tranmere Rovers in 2017, playing a handful of games in the National League before dropping further down the pyramid.

He signed for National League North side Curzon Ashton in June, after previously playing for Warrington Town.

Alex Manninger

Veteran goalkeeper Manninger joined the Reds on a short-term deal, staying for just one season.

The Austrian retired in 2017 and admitted to turning down a chance to join Liverpool’s coaching staff.

Andre Wisdom

After a number of loan moves, Wisdom completed a permanent exit in 2017, joining Derby County after a previous loan spell.

The defender has made more than 100 appearances for the club in all competitions, but his future looks uncertain. His contract expired in June and the Rams are currently under a transfer embargo.

Lucas Leiva

Lucas joined Luis Alberto at Lazio, and like his former Anfield colleague he is still at the Olimpico.

The Brazilian is a popular figure in Rome, playing 120 league games in his four years at the club.

Ryan Fulton

Academy graduate Fulton moved north of the border in 2017, joining Hamilton Academical.

He is still on the books of the Accies, who were relegated to the Scottish Championship last season.

Kevin Stewart

Stewart moved to Hull City in 2017, the same summer when Andy Robertson moved in the opposite direction and was a constant in the Tigers’ squad - if not the first XI - for three years.

The 27-year-old left was one of many players to leave Hull last summer but was without a club until signing for Blackpool in January.

Mamadou Sakho

Sakho left for Crystal Palace in August 2017, but the manager who took him to Selhurst Park, Frank de Boer, was dismissed less than two weeks later.

Despite enjoying his first few years at Palace, the French centre-back only made four league appearances last season and is currently a free agent.

Philippe Coutinho

The biggest departure of the lot, we all know about Coutinho’s nine-figure move to Camp Nou.

He has won the Champions League since that January 2018 move, but not in the manner he might have expected, and is back in Catalunya after that productive loan move to Bayern Munich in 2020. Though, Coutinho has consistently been linked with moves away from Barcelona this summer.

Cameron Brannagan

Brannagan left Liverpool for Oxford United in January 2018 and has made a big impression for his new club.

The midfielder has made more than 100 appearances for Karl Robinson’s side and was part of the team that helped the Yellows reach the League One play-offs last season.

Emre Can

Can’s free transfer to Juventus earned him a Serie A title in his first season, but the German has been on the move again since.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man joined Borussia Dortmund on loan in January before eventually signing permanently for Jurgen Klopp’s former side and continues to play his part for club and country.

Danny Ward

Ward’s move to Leicester City was expected to bring additional first-team opportunities, but the form of Kasper Schmeichel has made things difficult for the Welshman.

The £12.5m man is still waiting to make his Premier League debut for the Foxes but was Wales number one during this summer’s Euros.

Ragnar Klavan

Estonian centre-back Klavan did a solid job at Anfield, but was deemed surplus to requirements a few months after Virgil van DIjk’s arrival.

He spent three seasons with Cagliari, but the arrival of Diego Godin at the Italian club last season limited his game time. Now 35, Klavan has recently signed with Estonian side Paide Linnameeskond.

Dominic Solanke

Solanke set Bournemouth back nearly £20m in January 2019 but was unable to repay the fee with consistency in front of goal.

The former Chelsea youngster scored just three league goals as the Cherries were relegated to the Championship in 2020, though he scored 15 times last season on Bournemouth’s route to the play-off final.

Lazar Markovic

Markovic finally left Liverpool’s payroll in January 2019, joining Fulham on a short-term deal which saw him play just once.

The Serbian has had a better time of things since rejoining his first club, Partizan Belgrade, and has played for them in domestic and European competition.

Rafael Camacho

Despite being named on the bench for matches against Everton and Manchester United, Camacho only made two senior appearances for Liverpool, playing against Wolves in an FA Cup third round tie in January 2019 and coming off the bench in a win over Crystal Palace 12 days later.

The Portuguese winger joined Sporting CP, the club he’d started his youth career, for a fee of £7 million in 2020, but Camacho spent the second half of last season on loan at Rio Ave.

Daniel Sturridge

Sturridge’s talent was never doubted while he was at Liverpool, but injuries prevented the striker from nailing down a regular place in the starting lineup.

Released by the Anfield club just three days after the 2019 Champions League final, Sturridge signed for Trabzonspor in Turkey, scoring seven goals in 16 games. He was released from his contract in March 2020 after breaching betting rules but was confirmed to be training with Real Mallorca earlier this month after sitting out the entirety of last season.

Alberto Moreno

Having been replaced in the Liverpool lineup by Andy Robertson, Moreno was released by Liverpool at the end of the 2018/19 season. He made just five appearances in all competitions in his final season at Anfield.

The left back returned to Spain to sign a five-year contract with Villarreal and was part of the side that defeated Manchester United to win the Europa League in May.

Adam Bogdan

After loan spells at Wigan Athletic and Hibernian, Bogdan finally left Liverpool for good at the end of the 2018/19 season. The Hungarian signed a short-term contract with Hibernian, where he had spent the previous season on loan.

Bogdan made 18 Scottish Premiership appearances for the Leith club before spending last season with Hungarian side Ferencvaros.

Connor Randall

Following loan spells at Shrewsbury Town, Hearts and Rochdale, Randall left Liverpool at the end of the 2018/19 season as a free agent. The defender made the move to Arda Kardzhali in Bulgaria on a two-year contract.

Randall returned to the United Kingdom in 2020 to sign for Ross County in the Scottish Premiership, making 15 league appearances for the Staggies.

Danny Ings

As was the case with Sturridge, Ings’ quality was never in doubt as a Liverpool player. His fitness record, however, prevented him from becoming a key figure on Merseyside, leaving Anfield to sign for Southampton in August 2018.

Ings has enjoyed a career renaissance on the south coast, scoring 46 times in 100 appearances to date for the St Mary’s Stadium outfit. However, having recently rejected a new deal with the Saints, the 29-year-old could soon be on the move again.

Simon Mignolet

After over 200 appearances in six seasons for the Reds, Mignolet left Liverpool last summer, signing for Club Brugge in his homeland for a transfer fee of just over £6 million.

Mignolet has since made 91 appearances in all competitions for the Belgian club, holding down a place as Club Brugge’s first choice goalkeeper and earning a spot in Roberto Martinez’s Belgium squad for the Euros.

Ryan Kent

Having impressed on loan during the 2018/19 season, Rangers stumped up £7 million for Ryan Kent. There had been a clamour for the winger’s permanent signing north of the border, with his addition a marquee signing for Steven Gerrard.

Kent endured a slightly underwhelming 2019/20 campaign but hit top form last season, scoring eight and assisting nine in 33 league appearances, as Gerrard’s Gers won the league title.

Bobby Duncan

Billed as one of Liverpool’s brightest hopes for the future, Bobby Duncan left Liverpool in acrimonious circumstances as his agent accused the Anfield club of “mentally bullying the young player. Liverpool denied this claim.

Duncan signed for Fiorentina, playing for the Italian club’s academy team, but returned to sign for Derby County last year, featuring for their U23 side.

Allan Rodrigues de Souza

Much was expected of Allan when he was signed from Internacional for a fee of £500,000 in 2015, but the Brazilian failed to make the breakthrough at Liverpool.

Allan had loan spells at SJK, Sint-Truiden, Hertha Berlin, Apollon Limassol, Eintracht Frankfurt and Fluminense before finally leaving Liverpool for good in January 2020, signing for Atletico Mineiro, where he has held down a first team spot.

Pedro Chirivella

Chrivrella made 11 appearances in total over four years as a Liverpool player, including one as an ineligible player in a Carabao Cup tie against MK Dons, before leaving Merseyside at the end of the 2019/20 season as a free agent.

The defensive midfielder signed for Nantes in Ligue 1, becoming a regular for the French side as he made 32 league appearances.

Nathaniel Clyne

After suffering with injuries for a number of seasons, Liverpool released Clyne in the summer of 2020. The full back was still without a club until January of this year, retuning to Crystal Palace where he began his career.

Clyne made 13 Premier League appearances for the club last season but is currently a free agent, with his future looking unclear following the arrival of new boss Patrick Vieira.

Andy Lonergan

Signed as an emergency option for Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States in 2019, Lonergan failed to make a single appearance for the Reds, leaving the club at the end of the 2019/20 season.

Despite not playing a single game, Lonergan was handed a Premier League winners’ medal by Klopp who recognised his contribution on the training ground and in mentoring young players. The 37-year-old was recently reported to be training with Bolton Wanderers.

Dejan Lovren

Having been a regular first team figure for six seasons, Dejan Lovren left Liverpool in this summer’s transfer window, making a €12 million switch to Zenit St Petersburg in Russia.

Lovren lifted the Russian Super Cup in his Zenit debut against Lokomotiv Moscow, also scoring on his Champions League debut for the club, scoring from outside the box in a 2-1 defeat to Club Brugge. The defender also won the Russian Premier League before joining up with Croatia’s Euros squad this summer.

Adam Lallana

Lallana was an important figure for Liverpool for a number of seasons, helping the Anfield club to Premier League glory in his final season before being released last summer. He made 178 appearances in all competitions for the Reds.

Brighton moved quickly to sign Lallana as a free agent on a three-year contract. The attacking midfielder made 30 league appearances for Graham Potter’s side.

Ovie Ejaria

Once tipped as one for the future, Ejaria only made eight appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, spending loan spells at Sunderland, Rangers and Reading.

Ejaria left the club for good in a €3.9 million move to Reading in the summer transfer window having previously played for the Championship club on loan, playing 38 times for the Royals this season.

Ki-Jana Hoever

By scoring in a Carabao Cup match against MK Dons in September 2019, Hoever became the fourth youngest player to ever find the net for Liverpool behind Ben Woodburn, Michael Owen and Jordan Rossiter.

Wolves paid £9 million for the young defender in last summer’s transfer window, with the Dutch teenager making his debut for his new club in a 4-0 defeat to West Ham.

Rhian Brewster

Despite being tipped as one of Liverpool’s best academy graduates in years, Brewster left Liverpool in last summer’s transfer window, joining Sheffield United in a £23.5 million deal.

The 20-year-old scored 10 goals in 20 league appearances on loan at Swansea City in 2020, persuading Chris Wilder that he would be worth the outlay. However, the move didn’t go to plan, with the 21-year-old featuring 27 times without scoring as the Blades were relegated.

Herbie Kane

Nominated for the Golden Boy award in 2018, as one of the world’s best U21 players, Kane moved to Doncaster Rovers on loan a month later, making 38 league appearances.

He made his Liverpool debut the following year in the Carabao Cup against MK Dons, before a short spell on loan at Hull in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign. The 22-year-old moved to Barnsley for £1.25m last October and was a key member of the side that reached the Championship play-offs.

Gini Wijnaldum

A player that all Reds fans were sad to see leave this summer, Wijnaldum was a key player for Jurgen Klopp across his five seasons at Anfield, making 237 appearances in all competitons. Signed from Newcastle for £25m in 2016, the Dutch midfielder helped the club to Premier League and Champions’ League glory.

The 30-year-old played in all 38 league games last season but joined PSG this summer after failing to agree a new contract.

Kamil Grabara

Signed from Ruch Chorzow for £250,000, the Polish goalkeeper spent a few seasons at Melwood before joining Danish side Aarhus on loan in the second half of the 2018/19 season, before making 28 appearances in the Championship with Huddersfield Town the following year.

The 22-year-old returned to Aarhus last season, with his performances in the Danish top-flight convincing Copenhagen to sign Grabara on a five-year deal.

Marko Grujic

Liverpool fought off several clubs to sign the Serbian for £5.1m as a 20-year-old. The midfielder was initially loaned back to Red Star Belgrade, but made his Premier League debut against Burnley in August 2016

After spending a couple of seasons on the edges of the Liverpool squad, he was loaned to Cardiff, Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin for two years, and Porto. His performances for the latter last season persuaded the Portuguese side to sign the 25-year-old for £10.5m.

Taiwo Awoniyi

Due to work permit issues, the 23-year-old forward wasn’t able to train with his Liverpool team-mates for almost six years, prior to this summer. That prompted a long line of loan moves for the Nigerian, spanning the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.

A key player for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga last season, as the club secured an unlikely Europa League spot, Awoniyi joined the club permanently in a club-record £6.5m deal earlier this month.

Harry Wilson

Wales international Harry Wilson left Liverpool in a £12m deal to join Fulham in July 2021.

Wilson came through Liverpool's Academy ranks and was even handed a full Wales cap at the age of 16 in 2013, three years before he'd make his debut for the Reds' first team.

Five separate loan spells followed by Wilson was unable to force his way into Liverpool's plans, leaving for the Cottagers on a permanent deal.
