Jurgen Klopp has turned Liverpool from a team struggling to challenge for a top-four Premier League place into champions of England and Europe.

The Reds' revolution, in just under five years, has been nothing short of remarkable, and involved significant overhauls and upgrades to the German manager's playing staff.

A few members of that 2015/16 squad remain at Anfield, but many more have been moved on. We’ve taken a look at what has happened to the 43 players Klopp inherited on his arrival at Anfield.

Simon Mignolet

The Belgian was the regular goalkeeper at Anfield when Klopp arrived, and remained the undisputed number one until the arrival of Loris Karius. Mignolet was back-up to Alisson Becker for the 2018/19 campaign, but left for Club Brugge in the summer of 2019. Overall, he clocked up more than 200 appearances for the Reds.

Adam Bogdan

Bogdan arrived at Anfield from Bolton a few months before Klopp became manager, and made just six first-team appearances. He is remembered for his part in a harrowing 3-0 loss at Watford, where he dropped a corner kick and allowed Nathan Ake to open the scoring. He also conceded straight from a Lee Holmes corner in an FA Cup draw at Exeter. Bogdan now plays for Hungarian club Ferencváros after a spell in Scotland with Hibs.

Danny Ward

The Welsh goalkeeper was highly rated at Anfield. He was recalled early from a loan spell at Aberdeen in 2015/16 after racking up 13 clean sheets in half a season. He was influential for the Reds in a 2-1 home win over Bournemouth that campaign but did not establish himself above Mignolet, and later had a loan spell at Huddersfield - whom he helped to Premier League promotion. He joined Leicester in 2018 for a fee of £12.5m, but has failed to dislodge Kasper Schmeichel.

Nathaniel Clyne

The right-back arrived at Anfield in a £12.5m deal from Southampton in the summer of 2015 and was a regular in his first two seasons on Merseyside before injury problems struck. He has made just 10 appearances for the Reds over the past three seasons and spent the second half of the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Bournemouth. Clyne left Anfield last month upon the expiration of his contract.

Kolo Toure

Toure joined Liverpool as a free agent in 2013, spending three years at Anfield before linking up once more with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic for the 2016/17 campaign. He has since worked under Rodgers as a coach, firstly at Celtic before following the Northern Irishman to Leicester last year.

Dejan Lovren

The Croatian international remains at Anfield six years after arriving from Southampton and is closing in on 200 appearances for the Reds. However, Lovren has started just 20 of a possible 71 Premier League matches since the start of the 2018/19 campaign.

Joe Gomez

Injuries disrupted Gomez’s first two seasons on Merseyside. He arrived from Charlton the summer prior to Klopp’s appointment. Despite some lingering fitness issues, Gomez is now in the German’s first-choice XI and has played a pivotal role in recent years.

Mamadou Sakho

Sakho joined Crystal Palace initially on loan in 2016/17 after three campaigns at Anfield, then moved to south London permanently the following summer. His exit paved the way for Liverpool to break the bank to land Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.

Andre Wisdom

All of the defender’s 22 appearances for the Reds were under Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers. He joined Derby permanently in 2017 following multiple loan spells and has turned out for the Rams in more than 60 matches in the Championship.

Alberto Moreno

The former Seville full-back made 91 appearances in his first two seasons at Anfield but gradually fell out of favour, first to James Milner and then Andy Robertson. His contract expired last year and Moreno is now a squad player at Villarreal.

Tiago Illori

The Portuguese central defender only played under Klopp in the FA Cup before dropping down a division to Reading, where his fine form brought him a move to Sporting CP in 2018. He has enjoyed a good career there despite not making the cut at Anfield.

Martin Skrtel

The long-serving Slovakian, who made 320 Liverpool appearances over nine seasons, was one of the more surprising exits of the summer of 2016 - Klopp’s first at the club. His departure came two weeks after Joel Matip arrived on a free. Skrtel joined İstanbul Başakşehir this season after spending just one month at Atalanta.

Jon Flanagan

A native of Liverpool, the full-back made 51 first-team appearances for the Reds but injuries curtailed his progress . He joined Rangers after loan spells at Burnley and Bolton, and left the Scottish giants this summer at the end of his contract.

Brad Smith

The Australian left-back has won 22 international caps but joined Bournemouth in a reported £6m deal in 2016. Smith struggled for the Cherries and is currently on loan at Cardiff City following a spell playing for MLS side Seattle Sounders.

Connor Randall

The defender made eight senior appearances for Liverpool - seven under Klopp - but was released in the summer of 2019 following multiple loan spells. He initially joined Bulgarian side Arda Kardzhali before a move to Scottish outfit Ross County in January.

Joe Maguire

Maguire only played 15 minutes as a senior Liverpool player - in an FA Cup tie against Exeter. He joined Fleetwood Town in January 2017 and is now a regular for Accrington Stanley in League Two.

Jose Enrique

Enrique featured only in the FA Cup under Klopp before returning to Spain. He announced his retirement from football due to a persistent knee injury the following summer after a brief stint at Real Zaragoza. He received the all-clear from a brain tumour last year.

James Milner

Milner joined the Reds on a free transfer in the summer of 2015 after being released by Manchester City and was made vice-captain. He has now made more appearances on Merseyside than he did for City, and has been an instrumental part of Klopp’s team throughout his years at Anfield.

Philippe Coutinho

The Brazilian playmaker joined Barcelona in a landmark deal in January 2018, with reports suggesting the initial price was £105m plus multiple add-ons. However, he struggled at the Camp Nou and spent the past season on loan at Bayern Munich. He is now being linked with a return to the Premier League.

Jordan Henderson

The Liverpool captain who will lift the trophy tonight, he has surpassed 350 appearances for the club across his nine seasons. Henderson has evolved into a star player under Klopp.

Adam Lallana

Another player who swapped Southampton for Liverpool - in the summer of 2014 - and is leaving Anfield this summer following injury issues in recent years. Lallana was a regular for the Reds until 2017/18 when injuries began to limit his participation.

Lucas Leiva

The holding midfielder has become a pivotal figure at Italian giants Lazio since leaving Liverpool in 2017, his exit hastened by the arrival of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal. He made 346 Liverpool appearances and is now into triple figures at Lazio too, where he has won the Coppa Italia and two Italian Supercoppas.

Emre Can

The Germany international was an ever-present in Liverpool’s midfielder across four seasons, but he left for Juventus on a free transfer in the summer of 2018. No doubt the Reds were frustrated by losing the player, especially on a free, but the arrivals of Fabinho and Naby Keita on Merseyside have more than replaced his presence. Can is now at Borussia Dortmund.

Joe Allen

The Welsh midfielder was a regular under Klopp in the 2015/16 season, making 33 appearances, but was another casualty of the German’s first summer transfer window when he was sold to Stoke days after the arrival of Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle.

Jordan Rossiter

Klopp memorably bemoaned an injury suffered to Rossiter while on international duty with England under-19s by stating: “If we handle them like horses, we get horses.” The central midfielder has yet to make a big impact at Rangers, who he joined for a reported £250,000 in 2016. He did not feature in the Premier League under Klopp, and this season has been on loan at Fleetwood Town.

Cameron Brannagan

Brannagan was described by Klopp as “everything you need for a midfield player”, but despite a new deal and a handful of first-team appearances at Anfield, he joined Oxford permanently in January 2018 following a successful loan spell at Fleetwood Town. He has developed into one of League One’s star players.

Jordon Ibe

Ibe made 41 appearances for Liverpool in 2015/16, and became a promising England under-21 international. His career has badly stagnated since moving to Bournemouth and he has featured only sparingly for Eddie Howe’s struggling side this season.

Kevin Stewart

Stewart was handed his first-team debut by Klopp after returning from a loan spell at Swindon Town in January 2016 and made 20 appearances for the club before moving to Hull City permanently. He has made 71 appearances for the Tigers since his 2017 switch.

Ryan Kent

A one-time England under-20 international, Kent joined Rangers permanently in the summer of 2018 having impressed while on loan at Ibrox. Klopp said of the winger after he played against Seville: “Ryan had sensational moments in the game - one-on-one situations are his big strength. He is a wonderful kid, a wonderful player.”

Joao Carlos Teixeira

Teixeira made several appearances for Liverpool in 2015/16, but only a three-minute cameo in the Premier League. He couldn’t cut it at Porto after leaving the Reds in June 2016, and is now at Vitoria Guimaraes.

Sheyi Ojo

Now aged 23, all 13 of Ojo’s appearances for the Reds came under Klopp, who recalled him from a loan stint at Wolves in January 2016. He has had multiple loan spells since, most recently at Rangers, with his future beyond this summer unclear.

Lazar Marković

The Serbian winger never played for the Reds under Klopp, despite making 34 appearances 2014/15. Marković made just one appearance for Fulham after joining the Londoners in 2018, before moving to Partizan Belgrade this season.

Luis Alberto

A rare case of Liverpool undervaluing a player - he joined Lazio for just £3.5m in 2016. The Spanish winger never played under Klopp and was instead loaned to Malaga and Deportivo La Coruna.  Now he is a full Spain international and has thrived in Serie A - one of the few players who got away from the Reds.

Sergi Canos

The winger arrived at Anfield from Barcelona as a youth player in 2013. He appeared for Liverpool on the final day of the 2015/16 campaign before leaving for Norwich, but has now established himself as a star at Brentford and has been capped at under-21 level by Spain.

Pedro Chirivella

The Spaniard spent nine years in the youth set-up at Valencia before moving to Anfield as a 16-year-old and subsequently rose through the youth ranks on Merseyside. He made 10 first-team appearances for the Reds,  including the FA Cup victory over Everton in January. Chirivella has since joined French club Nantes following the expiration of his contract.

Marko Grujić

The Serbian midfielder made 14 appearances for the Reds between 2016 and 2018 with subsequent loan spells at Cardiff and Hertha BSC. Now aged 24, he returns to Anfield this summer but may be moved on permanently.

Christian Benteke

Liverpool made the Belgian striker their second most expensive arrival ever - after Andy Carroll - when signing him in 2015 from Aston Villa for a reported £32.5m. He had scored 49 goals in 101 appearances for Villa but swiftly fell out of favour under Klopp. Now at Crystal Palace, where his scoring woes have continued.

Roberto Firmino

The Brazilian was another of the 2015 batch of transfers who preceded Klopp but have gone on to become key players under the German. Firmino has formed a fearsome attacking trio alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, scoring 77 goals across five seasons.

Daniel Sturridge

The England international scored 67 times in 160 outings for the Reds but recurring fitness issues disrupted his career. He scored a stunning long-range equaliser in the dying moments at Stamford Bridge in his final season at the club. This season, he scored seven times in 16 appearances for Trabzonspor before having his contract mutually terminated. He was later given a four-month ban for breaching betting regulations.

Divock Origi

The Belgian’s first full season as a Reds player coincided with Klopp’s arrival, and he hit double figures for the club in successive seasons. Origi was loaned to Wolfsburg for the 2017/18 campaign but woul do on to become a crucial part of Liverpool's squad, scoring in the 2019 Champions League final victory over Tottenham.

Danny Ings

Ings was limited to just 25 appearances across three seasons at Anfield due to multiple injuries, having joined from Burnley on a free in the summer of 2015. He enjoyed a successful loan at Southampton in 2018/19 and made the move permanent last summer. Since then he has hit a fine vein of goalscoring form.

Jerome Sinclair

The promising forward left Liverpool, who he joined from West Brom aged 15,  in acrimonious circumstances. He signed for Watford when his contract expired, with a development fee owed. He is still at Vicarage Road but has had multiple loan spells, including at VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands.

Mario Balotelli

Balotelli was on loan at Milan when Klopp arrived, but left permanently at the end of the season, with Liverpool agreeing to release him so he could join Nice on a free. The talismanic but inconsistent striker is currently back in Italy, now playing for Brescia.
