The main purpose of this article is to spread awareness about brain tumours among the general public & to remove fear from their mind about the brain tumours. Today is World Brain Tumour Day which was pioneered by German Brain Tumour Association in the year 2000 with the above purpose & to draw attention of research institutions so as to find affordable treatment for all.

- Say many patients suffering from brain tumour.
Dr Pravin Ganjre says, Fortunately, as a result of extensive research in medical science, remarkable advancement in surgical techniques & with the availability of sophisticated medical equipment, the outlook with brain tumours is good. A person’s likelihood of developing brain tumour in their lifetime is less than 1%. So, do not panic ! If you have any query about brain tumour, consult a neurosurgeon.
What are Brain Tumours & its different types ?
A brain tumour is a mass or a lump in the brain which is caused by abnormal uncontrolled growth of cells. It can occur at any age. A tumour is not necessarily a cancer, so do not panic ! There are many types & subtypes of brain tumours.
Brain tumours can be benign or malignant. Benign tumours are less harmful, grow slowly, do not invade nearby tissues, do not spread & are unlikely to recur; whereas Malignant tumours are cancerous, they grow very fast, invade nearby tissues, spread to other parts of the body and are very likely to recur.
Brain tumours can be primary or secondary. Primary brain tumours originate in the brain itself & they do not spread to other parts of our body. In adults, the most common types are glioma, astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, meningioma & acoustic schwannoma; whereas in children, the most common types are medulloblastoma, grade I & II astrocytoma, ependymoma & brain stem glioma.
Secondary brain tumours (also known as Brain Metastases) originate in another part of our body & then spread to the brain. This variety is more common than the primary brain tumours.
Brain tumours can also be classified as Grade I , Grade II , Grade III or Grade IV. The higher the grade, the more aggressive is the tumour.

What are the Symptoms of Brain Tumour?
Symptoms vary according to the type & location of brain tumour. Some tumours have no symptoms until they are quite large & then they cause sudden deterioration in health-condition. Hence, periodic wellness-checkup with neurosurgeon’s opinion is important.
Headache is a common symptom. Other symptoms include convulsions, projectile vomiting, difficulty in speaking/hearing/walking; tingling, numbness or weakness in arms or legs; blurred vision; confusion; problems with memory; loss of balance; giddiness etc.
Dr. Pravin Ganjre is a renowned consultant neurosurgeon in Pune with an experience of 14 years. He has completed “Master of Surgery” from Sion hospital, Mumbai and he has 6 Gold-medals, 1 Silver-medal & many awards to his credit. He is a member of Congress of Neurological Surgeons (USA), a premier world-reputed organization. He has done fellowship in MIS Surgery from Singapore.
What are the Causes of Brain Tumour?
Extensive research is going on worldwide to find out the exact cause of brain tumours. The risk factors include exposure to ionizing radiation or pesticides; occupational-exposure such as those who work in petrochemical industry, synthetic rubber manufacturing or chemical manufacturing industry; history of HIV/AIDS; history of cancer such as leukemia, lymphoma etc.
What’s the Treatment for Brain Tumour?
You need to consult a neurosurgeon. He will advise you CT or MRI for the diagnosis of brain tumour. On the basis of findings on CT/MRI, the neurosurgeon may advise you surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or any suitable combination out of these four options. Surgery is typically the first option & standard treatment to remove the tumour. Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy may be required in addition to surgery. The option of endoscopic surgery is also available for some tumours.

Some tumours can’t be removed with surgery because of their critical location in brain. In such cases, radiotherapy, chemotherapy may be used to kill the tumour cells so as to shrink the tumour. When less radiation & high precision is needed, for example for tumours near optic nerve or skull-base, proton beam therapy is used. Stereotactic radiosurgery can be done using linear accelerator, gamma knife or cyber knife.
